Hear every theory test question read aloud

Every question, answer and explanation read aloud in English, like the voiceover you can ask for at the test. Then make the screen easier to read with a coloured background, larger text, wider spacing or the OpenDyslexic font.

You can ask for a voiceover at the test. Practise with one.

If you have dyslexia or another reading difficulty, the DVSA offers an English or Welsh voiceover at the theory test, and extra time on the multiple choice section if you supply evidence when you book.

Most people who choose the voiceover hear it for the first time on test day. Reading and audio lets you practise the way you will sit it: the question first, then each answer with its letter, then the explanation once you have answered. The line being read is highlighted, so you can follow along.

It always reads the English, because that is the language of the test. If you study with your language beside it, the translation stays on screen and is not read out.

What you can ask for when you book

An English or Welsh voiceover, and extra time on the multiple choice section with evidence supplied in advance. It has to be arranged when you book, not on the day.

What our voice is

The English voice built into your phone, tablet or computer, not the DVSA's recording. It is there so listening to a question feels normal before the day that counts.

  • A cream, blue, green, peach or grey background, with a dark version of each

Wherever you practise

One setting covers the questions, the mocks and everything you study, on the website and in the app.

Practice questions

The question, each answer and the explanation, read in the order they appear on screen. On a keyboard, press R to hear it again.

Mock tests

Read aloud works in a mock too, and the clock keeps running while it reads, as it does at the test.

English test words

Hear each of the English words the test uses said aloud as you learn it.

On your phone

The app reads with your phone's own voice, so it works offline. On iPhone, an Enhanced voice from Settings, Accessibility, Spoken Content sounds more natural.

Off until you want it

Nothing changes until you turn on Reading and audio in Account. After that, the Reading settings button on every question lets you adjust it mid practice.

Common questions

Does it read the questions in my language?

No. It reads the English, because that is what you will see and hear at the test. If you study with your language beside the English, the translation stays on screen and is not read out.

Is it the same voice as the real test?

No. It uses the English voice built into your phone, tablet or computer, not the DVSA's recording. On iPhone you can download a more natural Enhanced voice in Settings, Accessibility, Spoken Content.

Does it cost extra?

No. Reading and audio works on the free questions, and comes with every category you buy at no extra cost. Car is £4.49, once.

Does the timer stop while a mock is read aloud?

No. The clock keeps running, as it does at the test. If you need extra time at the real test, ask for it when you book.

How do I turn it on?

Go to Account, then Reading and audio, in the app or on the website. Once it is on, every question has a Reading settings button for changing it as you go.

Can I get extra time at the real test?

Yes, on the multiple choice section, if you supply evidence of your reading difficulty when you book. It cannot be arranged on the day.
