Practise the theory test in your language, and in English

Every DVSA question shown twice at once: the English wording you will meet on test day, with your language beside it.

You cannot sit the theory test in most languages

Foreign language voiceovers and interpreters were withdrawn on 7 April 2014. Since then the test has been available only in English, or Welsh in Wales. British Sign Language is available on screen for deaf candidates.

So an app that only translates the questions is preparing you for a test that does not exist. You would understand every question in practice, then meet a screen full of English on the day.

That is the whole reason we show both at once. You read your language to understand what is being asked, and you read the English to learn the phrasing you will have to recognise.

What changed on 7 April 2014

Foreign language voiceovers were removed from the theory test. Interpreters were no longer permitted for the theory or the practical test. The change applied across Great Britain.

What you can still ask for

An English or Welsh voiceover, extra time on the multiple choice section with evidence supplied in advance, and British Sign Language on screen. All of it must be arranged when you book.

Both languages, at the same time

The English wording sits first, exactly as it will appear on test day. Your language sits beneath it. Answers, explanations and road sign descriptions all work the same way.

Over a few hundred questions you stop needing the translation, which is precisely the point.

  • 7 languages, English included
  • Never instead of English, always beside it
  • Explanations translated too, not just the question
  • Switch language mid question without losing your place

Question 1 of 3

Who's responsible for paying the vehicle tax?

Kto odpowiada za zapłatę podatku od pojazdów?
Pick an answer to see the explanation. Switch language at any time: the question does not reset.

Choose your language

All 7 are included with whichever test category you buy, at no extra cost.

The English version is always the authoritative one. Translations cover the question bank and are provided to help you understand what is being asked, not as a substitute for the English material. See clause 14 of our terms of service.

Accessibility arrangements at the real test

Nothing here is ours to sell. It is what the DVSA offers, and all of it has to be arranged when you book.

Reading difficulties

An English or Welsh voiceover is available, and extra time on the multiple choice section if you supply evidence in advance.

Deaf candidates

British Sign Language on screen for the theory test, and a BSL interpreter for the practical test.

Arrangements must be requested when you book, not on the day. See the accessibility guidance on GOV.UK.

Common questions

Can I bring an interpreter?

No. Interpreters were withdrawn on 7 April 2014 and are not permitted for either the theory or the practical test.

Can I use a dictionary in the test?

No. Nothing may be taken into the test room with you.

Is the test available in Welsh?

Yes. Welsh is a permitted test language and you can sit the whole theory test in it.

What if I have dyslexia?

You can ask for an English or Welsh voiceover, and for extra time on the multiple choice section if you supply evidence when you book.

Will translated practice actually help me pass?

On its own, not enough. Translation alone leaves you unable to read the real paper. Reading both languages together is what prepares you for an English test.

Do the other languages cost more?

No. All 7 are included with every category, and there is no upgrade tier.
